University of Perugia honors Sister for 28 years of dedicated service

ASSISI, ITALY - On October 16, 2014 Sister Mary Frances Traynor, FSE was honored by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences of the University of Perugia for 28 years of enthusiastic, dedicated teaching of scientific-agriculturally-based English.  She taught in the Faculty of Agriculture from 1986 to 2008 and at the University Language Center from 2008 to 2014. The honors ceremony was held as part of the department’s celebration of the United Nations sponsored “World Day of Food.” This year has been named the International Year of Family Farming.

The Faculty paid tribute to Sister Mary Frances not only for her outstanding teaching but also for her professional scientific expertise in the many-faceted ways of collaboration with faculty members. The plaque which she received reads: “With profound gratitude for total dedication, competence and loving firmness in helping students and faculty members in acquiring skills and competence in the English language.” Among the many achievements cited were Sister Mary Frances’ position as Scientific Editor of the “Italian Journal of Food Science” which she held from the founding of the Journal in 1988  until 2010. Many faculty members, collaborators and students were present at the ceremony.

Sister Mary Frances earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Viterbo College (now University), a Master of Science degree in Crop and Soil Sciences, area of Soil Chemistry and Fertility from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Sciences, area of Soil Chemistry and Clay Mineralogy from Michigan State University. Upon completing 28 years of work at the University of Perugia this year, Sister has been sought after as a consultant and is currently engaged in a number of new projects in Italy.
