Jim Calhoun invites Sisters to Final Four

MERIDEN, CT (03-31-2011) - Once word got out that Jim Calhoun, Head Coach of the UConn Huskies Men's Basketball team, had called to invite Mother Shaun Vergauwen and Sister Mary Richards to the Final Four event in Houston this weekend, reporters from newspapers, tv news stations and local radio stations gathered at the Franciscan Life Center to interview the Sisters. In the photo below, courtesy of The Record-Journal, Mother Shaun (left) and Sister Mary enjoy talking with the group of reporters.

Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat have been supporters and friends of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist for over 20 years. At the Coach's invitation, Mother Shaun and Sister Mary attended the Final Four games in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1999 when UConn won the championship. In 2004, Mr. Calhoun again invited them to San Antonio, although the Sisters returned to Connecticut before the games began due to the death of Franciscan Brother of the Eucharist, Brother Angelo Elliott. Mother Shaun and Sister Mary will leave Friday for the "big dance" in Houston as their Sisters and Brothers back home in Connecticut and around the world cheer on the Huskies.
