Sister Marcia Ternes, FSE
Sister Marcia Ternes, FSE, was born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, but she has the rare gift of being at home just about anywhere. Her years of dedication to Christ have led her to serve his people in all walks of life around the globe.
As a founding member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, Sister Marcia began her work in education in Chicago. Her love for people and desire for their good naturally moved her to become a licensed clinical social worker. She lived and worked at the Motherhouse in Meriden, Connecticut for many years. During Sister Marcia’s time in Meriden she was part of the Community’s formation team as directress of pre-postulants and postulants. She helped young women discern God’s will for them and many found their vocations as Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist through her wise counsel.
In 1974 Sister Marcia began Franciscan Home Care. It was a modest start. With a car to get to clients’ homes and a charming smile to get her in the door, she set out to serve the needs of the elderly in Meriden. Over the years the apostolate grew and today Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care is a fully licensed home health care agency serving hundreds of home-bound people, and persons in need of hospice care in over twenty-five towns.
When the Sisters were invited to join a mission with the OFM Conventual Friars in 2006, Sister Marcia volunteered to go. She and two other Sisters became a part of the Franciscan team in Jamaica, West Indies, collaborating with the Friars and the local people. It was a challenging but joy-filled missionary ministry of presence and community-building.
Returning to the United States, Sister Marcia was named the local superior in Bridal Veil, Oregon. Sister quickly immersed herself in the many activities and outreaches of the Bridal Veil center. She was there for several years serving the needs of the community and facing down more than a few wildfires.
In the summer of 2018, Sister Marcia answered the call for a new mission at Duke University. In collaboration once more with the OFM Conventual Friars, Sister Marcia and Sister Frances Zajac are assisting with on-campus faith formation at The Catholic Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Known for her gentle persistence and warm nature, Sister Marcia has a reputation for being able to make friends with anyone.
